About John A. Kinnaird
I am a relative newcomer to Thurmont having moved here on April 8, 1960, at the age of 6 with my parents and sister from our home in Aberdeen Scotland. A newcomer after 64 years? Yes, as anyone living in a small town knows, you will still be considered a newcomer by a portion of the locals regardless of how long you have lived there. This to me is part of the charm of being welcomed and accepted by the citizens of Thurmont. I could not have asked for a better town in which to grow up or to raise my family than right here in Thurmont!
This area is a photographer's dream, with four distinct seasons to work with, history at every turn, and some of the most spectacular scenery ever, it’s hard not to take great pictures! I am also a member of several local groups and organizations, this involvement includes volunteering to take photographs of many local events. As an avid amateur photographer, I always have a camera at hand, regardless of the occasion! I also maintain the website thurmontimages.com where I display over 6,000 historic images of Thurmont and the surrounding communities.
My interest in photography started early and has progressed from an early 1960s black and white Polaroid through 35 mm, 110 mm, back again to 35 mm, and now on into digital format. Most of the recent images here are digital and have been taken with my early Toshiba M81, Nikon D100 or Nikon D200 cameras. The images here were taken in JPEG format with few exceptions and are always at the highest possible resolution. I have always used Paint Shop Pro ( Jasc now Corel PSP X2 ) for any touchups, adjustments or conversions and would recommend it without hesitation. The images displayed have been compressed to allow for ease of display. I will happily provide a limited number of digital copies of the images for private noncommercial use only. Welcome to Kinnaird Images.com, these pages contain a collection of my photographs, most centered in or around my hometown of Thurmont, MD
Thurmont is known as the Gateway to the Mountains and is one of the most scenic areas in the Old Line State. Located 50 miles north of Washington, Thurmont is surrounded by the rolling countryside of Frederick County. Directly to our west are the Catoctin Mountains home to the Catoctin Mountain National Park and the Cunningham Falls State Park. To the east, the rolling farmland leads toward Baltimore,
the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. North of Thurmont at Gettysburg, PA is the site of one of the greatest battles of the American Civil War, beyond that the great mountains of central Pennsylvania and rolling farmlands of Lancaster County’s Amish community. Traveling south leads past Catoctin Furnace, home of a Revolutionary-era iron furnace, and on to the historic City of Frederick. Our Nation’s Capital, Washington, D.C. lies further to the south along the Potomac River with all its Federal history, monuments, and museums. Cross the Potomac into Virginia and experience over 300 years of American history.
These images cover various subjects, from local events to scenery and attractions. Centrally located between Washington, D.C., Baltimore, MD, and Harrisburg, PA we are within an hour's drive of some of the most historic and picturesque locations in the Mid-Atlantic region. Some albums will contain historic images from my collection along with recent views to give you a perspective of how little some things have changed. You are invited to take a few minutes and have a look at my little part of the world. Please contact me with any questions or comments about any of the images.
I hope you enjoy your visit!
